Temper’s the one thing you can’t get rid of by losing it.
I help people learn to control their anger and live calmer, happier lives through powerful and practical psycho-educational anger management classes. I’ve overcome my own anger management problem and want to help you do the same.
Before I attended an anger management programme, I struggled to control my temper. I was verbally and sometimes physically violent and felt regret and shame afterwards. This article about my anger issues and how I learnt to manage my anger first appeared in the Guardian newspaper.
Experience: I used to hit my husband
‘I felt scared and ashamed of what I’d done. I apologised and thought it was a one-off, but it was a pattern that would carry on for the next 10 years’
The first time I struck him was during an argument over money. He’d decided to pay off a loan without telling me and we’d gone overdrawn. I was worried and tried to discuss it with him, at which point he left the room. I felt we hadn’t talked it through properly and followed him. The next minute I was hitting him around the head.
Anger management is often misperceived as being for scary, violent people; for men; for psychopaths; for people who are “not like us”, but in fact it is to help with the normal, universal, human feeling of anger which so many of us were never taught to deal with and which is often internalised. It is to improve wellbeing and relationships. It is for people like you and me.
I know how hard it can be to take the first step and ask for help. However, after often anxious beginnings, most people, to their pleasant surprise, look forward to their sessions with me and make quick progress.
My anger management qualifications and experience
I am an anger management specialist psychotherapist and facilitator. I have been working in the fields of anger and conflict for nearly 30 years.
My first career was as a family law solicitor and mediator. In this work I learnt that problems dealing with anger were at the root of many of my clients’ unhappy relationship dynamics. It is a pleasure now to be offering effective help with this issue.
I have a Diploma in stress and anger management from the “British Association of Anger Management” (BAAM) and have facilitated BAAM courses. I have appeared many times in the media to discuss anger management.
I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and an EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner. EMDR is a specialist therapy for processing trauma, which is a source of many people’s anger problems. It helps to reduce the impact of negative past events on you and your relationships. I find that it helps many of my clients to manage their anger more easily and to feel more calm.
